Ajay Close

Ajay’s latest novel, ‘The Daughter of Lady Macbeth’, explores the ambivalent bond between mothers and daughters and the kernel of mystery in even the longest marriages, to ask: are we as civilised as we believe – or are we just animals at the mercy of our instinctual drives?

Set in Glasgow and rural Perthshire, the novel follows Freya, 43, her husband Frankie and her actress mother Lilias over a turbulent few months.

George McNeill – The fastest man in the world

George McNeill began his sporting career signing for Hibs at the age of sixteen. Giving up football to concentrate on athletics he found he was barred from running as an amateur due to his short lived professional football career so he would never compete at the Commonwealth or Olympic Games. Despite this, he went on to set a World Professional Sprint record and win a World Professional Sprint title in 1972. His successes are relatively unknown to
the wider public… until now.

His story, told by McNeill himself, depicts his remarkable true tale with hilarious anecdotes, archival film and music.

Eric Bibb Band

To label Eric Bibb as a bluesman is not telling the full story. Is he a folk artist? Soul man? A gospel guy? Yes; all of that and more. A progressive preservationist, among a handful of traders of the lost art, in the company of the likes of Taj Mahal, Keb Mo, Corey Harris, Alvin Youngblood Hart and Guy Davis, among others. His music is rooted in tradition, but with a large helping of contemporary sensibility to make it retro AND relevant. In a fifty year career, Eric has performed for Nelson Mandela and the King of Sweden amongst other international dignitaries. He plays an average of 150 shows a year and has toured in circa 25 countries. What a fabulous musician, we are so pleased to be able to bring him back to North Berwick.

The Honeycutters – From the USA

Their music has been described as Appalachian honky tonk, and being from the mountains of North Carolina, that’s maybe as close as it gets. But The Honeycutters have a richer depth of character than that suggests. The five-piece boasts a powerful lead vocalist in Amanda Anne Platt, who has been rightly compared to some of the great female performers of the post-war years.

Big Comedy Thursday

Richard Herring, Jan Ravens, Jarlath Regan and compere Zoe Lyons

Richard Herring: King of the Edinburgh Fringe, Metro columnist and the UK’s Podfather (RHLSTP, AIOTM). From his deconstruction of the genealogy of Christ to him proving that racists are less racist than liberals, via some of the best knob jokes in the business.

Jan Ravens, star of the hit Radio 4 series Dead Ringers, brilliantly observes an array of contemporary characters, including Theresa May and Diane Abbott. Razor-sharp satire delivered with startling virtuosity.

Jarlath Regan, host of the Irishman Abroad podcast, has made his living performing stand-up across Ireland, the UK and the rest of the world since he was 24. How long ago is that? Nobody knows.

Zoe Lyons is the host, a familiar face on TV, with her sideways view of life, picking out the many absurdities and turning them into hilarious routines which she delivers with tremendous energy.

The Rezillos

The Rezillos burst forth upon the rock scene through a shared love of Sixties Garage Rock and the Spectoresque Girl Group glam of The Ronettes and the Shangri Las. They were caught up in the Punk movement, if only because they didn’t proscribe to fifteen minute slabs of tedious progressive rock, preferring a world that runs on high-octane, guitar driven, anti-mope rock with the wildest hook lines.

Tommy Smith & Brian Kellock

Two of Scotland’s finest jazz artists, saxophonist Tommy Smith and pianist Brian Kellock, have teamed up to bring appreciative audiences some of the most beautiful, haunting and iconic pieces in the jazz repertoire. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the commentary from the press has been routinely littered with phrases such as ‘bewitching layers of delicacy’, ‘full flight’, ‘spontaneous invention’, and ‘sheer artistry’. Tommy and Brian are a musically
dynamic duo who bring reverence and invention in equal measure to the timeless art of jazz.

Dirty Harry and The Springsteen Sessions

Dirty Harry captures the rapture of Blondie and has not only the original sound, feel, attitude, and full back catalogue of the band but a look- alike of Debbie to deliver the good stuff. Dr Sarah Kennedy is stunning as Ms Harry, backed by a group of Scotland’s finest musicians. The essence of Dirty Harry is to put on a show Blondie would give the nod to.

The Springsteen Sessions have built up a strong following in Scotland and increasingly elsewhere in the UK as an energetic and dynamic 7-piece band who faithfully recreate the excitement and drive of The Boss and The E Street Band. They are a homage to the music of one of the most iconic performers of the last forty years, and they feature music from the earliest period of his career right through to the most recent recordings.
